Tri Delta’s national philanthropy is St. Jude Children’s ResearchHospital in Memphis, TN. The Alpha Sigma Chapter of Tri Delta remains steadfastly devoted to raising money for St. Jude, in the hope that childhood cancer will one day be eradicated.
In 2006, Tri Delta created a new campaign called “10 in 10,” pledging to raise $10 million for St. Jude in 10 years. Tri Delta not only met this goal in less than four years, but it was the largest donation ever made to a charity by any Greek organization. At the end of July 2010, Tri Delta made a new pledge of $15 million dollars in five years, which will fund the construction of the new Specialty Clinics at St. Jude.
In 2007, our Chapter began participating in the Sincerely Yours letter-writing campaign. From our four years of participating in Sincerely Yours, the Alpha Sigma chapter has raised more than $45,000 for St. Jude.
In March 2011, we hosted our second annual “Frats at Bat” softball tournament to benefit St. Jude. With 18 teams vying for the championship, the event was competitive and exciting for spectators and players. Tri Delta members coached the teams, made posters, served lunch and cheered on players. A good time was had by all in the spirit of community service. We raised $4,300 for St. Jude and are looking forward to hosting another successful Frats at Bat event in March 2012!
In addition to raising money for St. Jude, the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Tri Delta hosts and participates in many local philanthropic events. Tri Delta members volunteer for the Pediatric Playroom at UNC Children’s Hospital once a month. Our Pancake Dinner is an event we hold in February each year before Dance Marathon to support our girls on the Tri Delta Dance Marathon Team. The UNC Dance Marathon is an event where students dance and stand for 24 hours to raise money for UNC Hospitals. We invite members of the local community to our house for dinner where our girls cook and serve pancakes.
These activities accompany the many philanthropic endeavors which individual Tri Deltas take part in, from coaching youth soccer to volunteering at UNC Hospitals.
In the upcoming year, we hope to further increase our participation with both local and national charities, understanding that to whom much has been given, much will be expected.
